Washington Football Team name change: Twitter user may have found the club’s new nickname before the February 2 unveiling

The Washington Football Team has spent two full seasons looking for a new identity for the future. On February 2, that future will finally arrive when the team finally reveals its new name, but it still hasn’t stopped the crazy network connection from trying to figure out what the name is before it’s officially revealed.

In a Twitter post on Wednesday, user Larry Legend believed he had found the team’s new name, noting that the domain “Commanders.com” had been transferred from Namecheap to MarkMonitor – the same company the NFL used in all of its domains. The transfer took place on that day at 19.34 ET.

While the user saw the event as confirmation that the team’s new name would be Washington Commanders, it wasn’t quite so. Sam Fortier Washington Post pointed out that not all NFL teams use MarkMonitor, and the Washington Football Team itself uses GoDaddy in its domain.

Fortier pointed out that such claims about confirming a team’s name can be verified by looking at IP addresses, as the league’s official website and 31 of its 32 teams refer to the same four addresses.

In the report by Michael Phillips Richmond Times-Dispatch, it was pointed out that the Commanders.com domain was previously dedicated to a member of the “Commanders Club,” a group that respects the James Bond movie series. The owner of the site confirmed that he had sold the domain but had done so through an online referral and had no contact with the Washington Football Team in doing so.

While Washington Commander will be the new name for the team, there is also the possibility that this is another red herring. Washington gave up the Redskins name in June 2020, becoming the first fully rebranded NFL team after (formerly Houston) the Tennessee Oilers were renamed the Tennessee Titans when they moved to Nashville in the late 1990s.
