Brantly Millegan will no longer serve as a steward of the Ethereum Name Service (ENS), after a tweet he posted back in 2016 was uncovered. He also lost his role as director of operations of True Names Ltd (TNL), the company that supports the ENS project.
In the tweet, Millegan said that “homosexual acts are evil. Transgenderism doesn’t exist. Abortion is murder. Contraception is perversion. So is masturbation and porn.” Millegan is a Catholic.
ENS community delegates voted to remove Millegan from his position. The vote was not unanimous, with many highlighting that a group that supports decentralization shouldn’t be so quick to cancel people for religious beliefs.
“Brantly contributed to ENS success and deserves to be here. I respect the fact that he stands by his words and doesn’t pull the usual ‘It was four years ago, I’m different now, blablabla,’” wrote “victorstark” in the discussion thread. “Woke and cancel people are more toxic than Brantly ever could be, pure herd mentality at work.”
On Monday, ENS’ founder Nick Johnson confirmed that Brantly would also be fired from ENS’ legal entity TNL.
“Brantly has been a valued team member of TNL for the past three years. However, as a team we felt that his position with TNL is no longer tenable,” Johnson said in a Twitter thread. “Many of you were hurt by Brantly’s comments over the past 24 hours, and we strongly believe that ENS should be an inclusive community. Going forward we’ll continue to do everything we can to ensure that remains the case.”
Millegan has not apologized for the tweet, because of his religious beliefs. He took to Discord to reaffirm those beliefs but clarified he was open to working and being friends with all sorts of people. He added that Jews, Christians, and Muslims should be part of Web 3.
ENS allows the use of a domain name as a wallet. It gives users .eth domain names instead of the usually long wallet address.
Millegan is largest delegate in ENS’ largest and most powerful delegate with 377.68K votes.
