A fraternity brother of mine is a news television director for Fox 5 in Washington, DC. Yesterday, he reached out to chat with me on Twitter about a domain name that could be related to the rebranded Washington NFL football team. Commanders.com recently transferred to MarkMonitor and is now registered to its DNStination privacy service.
The Washington Football Team, formerly known as the Washington Redskins, is undergoing a rebrand. Speculation has mounted for many months about the new name of the NFL team. When Commanders.com transferred to the brand protection registrar used by the NFL for some of its domain names, people began speculating that the NFL team would soon be known as the Washington Commanders:
Washington Commanders = confirmed.
The https://t.co/yrU1fTNObC domain was transferred from Namecheap to MarkMonitor (same company NFL uses for all their domains) as of 7:34pm EST today.@WashingtonNFL | #WashingtonFootball | #WFT pic.twitter.com/ru53FDSqR4

I did a bit of research on Namebio and saw that the Commanders.com domain name sold via Sedo last Summer for $20,000. I connected my college friend with Dave Evanson, Senior Sales and Brokerage Consultant at Sedo. Dave was interviewed by a Fox 5 Washington DC reporter yesterday afternoon. The news outlet published an article about how the domain name transfer may have tipped off fans about the change of the team’s name from Redskins to (Football Team to) Commanders.
If the Washington NFL team is going to be rebranded as the Commanders, the organization was smart for acquiring the Commanders.com domain name in advance of the rebrand. The NFL team has a reveal event scheduled for February 2, so it shouldn’t be long until we know for certain.
