Domain Name Wire celebrates its 17th anniversary today.
I started this humble site on March 9, 2005. I enjoyed trading in domains, so I started the site as a hobby. At the time, no daily news sources covered the business of domains.
A while later, companies like Sedo contacted me about advertising on the site. More and more advertisers signed up, and I transitioned Domain Name Wire from a hobby into a business. It now serves as a trade publication for the domain industry, covering all facets of the business.
17 years is a long time to do anything. I chuckle when I look back at pictures from domain conferences 17 years ago. We were so young! I’m sometimes asked what my endgame is with Domain Name Wire. I’m not sure. I don’t know if I’ll be doing this 17 years from now and what the domain industry will look like then. But I can tell you that I still enjoy (most parts of) running the site, so I’m going to keep at it. Even if the site experiences teenage angst.
