Bird.com: “One of the Biggest Sales of Last Year and of All Time”

I believe Andrew Allemann was the first to write about MessageBird’s private acquisition of the Bird.com domain name in an article on Domain Name Wire. The domain name sale came after a seven figure auction sale apparently fell through. Andrew did not mention the sale price of Bird.com, but he did mention the deal was brokered by Right of the Dot.

Last week, Robin Wauters of Tech.eu published an article about the domain name acquisition. In the article, he shared a tidbit about how much may have been paid to acquire the Bird.com domain name:

“A little bird (ha!) informed us that MessageBird ended up coughing up more than $10 million for the prized domain name thanks to the bidding war, but we can’t independently confirm that, so take it with a grain of bird seed (ha!).”

Given the auction price, I was surprised to learn that it could have sold for that much money. I reached out to Monte Cahn, CEO of Right of the Dot, to ask him if he could comment about the quote regarding the sale price in the Tech.eu article. Although Monte would not share the price of the domain name, he did hint that it was substantial:

“Unfortunately I cannot talk about the price, however It would be one of the biggest sales of last year and of all time.”

Impressive.

It will be interesting to see what MessageBird does with the Bird.com domain name. It will also be interesting to see if the sale price is eventually revealed in a future SEC or other regulatory filing.
