Widespread Crypto Mining Disruption Affecting Operations Across Europe and Parts of Asia Using Alibaba Cloud
Widespread Internet connectivity and blocked access issues are affecting cryptocurrency miners across most of Western, Central, Eastern Europe, and parts of Northern Asia. While not an exhaustive list, the confirmed mining interruptions have affected: viaBTC, Poolin, f2pool, Binance, and BTCcom. The common link connecting these mining pools is that they run on Alibaba (NYSE:) Cloud. I spoke directly with an Alibaba Cloud service representative who was not aware of any connectivity problems or service interruptions.
As of this writing, the server inaccessibility issues are manifesting as incorrect Domain Name System (DNS) errors. The DNS is the standardized naming system to identify computers, services, and networks reachable across the internet. The resource records coded within the DNS associate domain names with other information necessary for connectivity to occur.
Types of responses crypto miners are receiving are listed below, which have been shared exclusively with DailyCoin while some have been posted to a Telegram miners’ forum.
Additional prompts include “Name or service not known” as well as chaotic page responses with addresses of unrelated websites such as Facebook (NASDAQ:), Twitter (NYSE:), and Dropbox (NASDAQ:) rather than mining servers.
Miners are reporting issues across the following countries: Sweden, Slovenia, Turkey, Russia, Poland, Romania, Norway, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Italy, Spain, Hungary, France, Denmark, and Germany. It’s worth noting it might be a server or proxy issue since many of the messages we’re seeing are encouraging miners to “change the DNS,” which indicates that actual servers are functional but access could be restricted for other reasons such as government bans.
On The Flipside
- The cause of these Internet connectivity issues are unknown. We’ll continue to provide updates on this situation as more information becomes available.
Why You Should Care?
It’s odd that connectivity issues are affecting various crypto miners across many countries on the same day that the general crypto-space experienced a near 10% drop before bouncing back.
